All Hermary Opto scanners employ the co-planar configuration.  This configuration places the laser reference beams in the same plane as the linear imaging system.  The advantages of this arrangement are that space requirements are small (typically a few inches), they require smaller or no covers to block external lighting and only a small portion of the log is blocked by handling equipment.
