Post and Pole Pointing / Capping / Domer
Fence posts that will be driven into the ground by mechanical means usually consist of a pointed end to aid penetration into the ground. The other end of the post is typically capped (chamfered) to give it a finished look and to aid in shedding water/snow.
Fence post pointing equipment can consist of hand operated machinery where each post is manually fed into the machine, to fully automatic production equipment. The most common post points are cone shaped formed by pushing the post into a rotating coned cutter head (pointing head) or pushing the post at an angle into a flat plate with cutter knives. Waste from this method consists of sawdust/shavings. Another method produces two or four sided shaped points by cutting the angled faces with blades. Waste from this method consists of solid wood wedges. Chamfering / Doming the tops is achieved by similar equipment that created the cone shaped post points and often happens at the same time as pointing.
