Carriages, or headrigs, are used to transport logs through the head saw to saw the log into flitches, boards and cants. The carriage consists of a frame on wheels than runs on tracks similar to rail road tracks. Mounted on the carriage is a set of bunks that clamp the log solid with air operated dogs and position the log in relation to the head saw.
The carriage is moved forward and back by means of a cable driven with hydraulic or electric drive. There are also hydraulic cylinder drive systems.
The carriage passes the position log through the head saw. The head saw is typically a bandmill, either single or double cut. Some head saws use circular saws which have the disadvantage of heavier kerf. The carriage, or headrig can have the log positioned manually or have an optimization system to automatically determine the best cutting pattern for each log.
There are also overhead end dog carriages that clamp the logs at the end. The carriage feeds the log through pre-positioned chipper heads and twin or quad bandsaws. The log is optimized and rotated prior to being clamped by the end dog.
