Functional Description:

Spark detection systems are used as a fire prevention method in dust collectors, collection and pneumatic conveying systems by detecting sparks and embers.

 

Sparks and burning embers generated from normal manufacturing processes quite frequently provide that ignition source  .Operations that are abrasive or grinding in nature, subject to high temperatures, or involve metal to metal contact are particularly conducive to the generation of sparks.  Hammer mills, sanders, planers, grinders, welders, driers and other cutting devices are among many common operations found in facilities in a number of industries. Sparks from these processes can be transported through the ductwork to the dust collector by the pneumatic system in a matter of seconds.  If the spark reaches the collector due to lack of a spark detection system, an explosion is likely to result.

 

Spark extinguishing systems receive a signal from the spark detection system that a spark, sparks or embers are present in the air stream in the ductwork.  Extinguishment immediately releases a fine mist of water downstream, extinguishing sparks and embers and reduces the risk of an explosion.  In most cases, the abort gate will open and the fan system will shut down.
