The concept of curve sawing, or sweep sawing, is to follow the curvature of the cant in order to maximize the lumber recovery, grade recovery and length retention of the boards. Compound curve sawing allows the cant to be sawn in an "s curve" pattern. There are several types of curve sawing methods.
With the "wiggle arbor" or "wiggle box" curve sawing gang edger, the cants are scanned and optimized either transverse or lineal. With transverse scanning the cant is pre-positioned in the edger infeed. With lineal scanning the position of the cant on the scan belt or chain is determined and the saws are positioned accordingly. The cant is held firmly in position as it is fed through the gang edger and the saw arbors articulate and translate to follow the curvature that was determined by the optimizer. Lineal curve sawing gang edgers can be either horizontal arbor or vertical arbor.
Lineal table curve sawing gang edgers position the cant to the saws based on the optimized solution generated by the scanning and optimization system. The saw arbors are fixed in position and the feedrolls are controlled by hydraulic linear positioners which guide the cant through the optimum curvature.
Other types of curve sawing gang edgers and single pass machines use mechanical forces to feed the cant through the gang edger following the cant's natural curvature. Usually the saws are positioned to an optimum reference point on the cant.
